1. Pick a niche and a point of view
The most common mistake is being too broad. A clear niche — streetwear, gym wear, sustainable basics, faith-based apparel — gives you a focused audience, a tighter product range, and a reason for customers to choose you over fast fashion.
Define who you serve, what you stand for, and the 3–5 hero products you will launch with. Everything downstream (fabric, fit, price) flows from this.
2. Design and build a tech pack
You do not need to be a designer, but you do need a tech pack — the spec sheet a factory uses to make your garment. Without one, quotes are guesses and samples miss the mark.
A tech pack covers measurements, fabric, colours (Pantone), trims, labels, print/embroidery placement and packaging. If you only have sketches or a reference garment, a good manufacturer can build the tech pack with you.
3. Find the right manufacturer
Match the factory to your product and stage. Look for low MOQs if you are testing, in-house decoration if you need printing/embroidery, and clear communication with a real merchandiser — not a faceless portal.
Ask about MOQ per style/colour, sampling fees and lead times, certifications (BSCI, WRAP, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), and whether they ship DDP so you are not surprised by duties.
4. Sample before you commit
Never skip sampling. A first sample (and usually one revision) confirms fit, fabric hand-feel, colour and print before you commit to bulk. Sampling fees are typically credited back against your bulk order.
Wear-test the sample, wash it, and check measurements against your tech pack. This is the cheapest place to catch problems.
5. Understand MOQs, pricing and margin
MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest run a factory will produce per style/colour — often from 50 pieces for new brands. Lower MOQ means higher per-unit cost; larger runs lower it.
Price for a healthy margin: a common rule is a 2.0–2.5x markup from landed cost to wholesale, and 2x again to retail. Factor in shipping, duties, packaging, returns and marketing — not just the garment cost.
6. Plan production timelines and launch
A realistic timeline from approved sample to delivered bulk is around 15–40 days depending on quantity, decoration and fabric. Build buffer time and order before you need stock.
Line up your store, photography and marketing while production runs, so launch day has product, content and an audience ready at the same time.
